Hermann Park

If you are from Houston then this park should need no introduction, and if you are visiting then this is a must experience. George Hermann set this park to be one of Houston’s most historic sites in 1914, and his vision still lives on today.

Hermann Park always makes me proud to say I’m a native Houstonian. Having also been born at Hermann Hospital just makes it that much more special. The countless wonderful memories I enjoy to this day are a testament to George Hermann’s vision and the commitment of all those who found that vision worth supporting. I particularly cherish the experiences we had at the Memorial Day event in 1987. Life-changing. (2007-11-07 17:29:16)

This is my favorite place in Houston to bike. Superb place to people watch! People from all over come to Herman, and it’s just plain fun to watch them experience this Houston gem. Ride along side the mini-train, take a nap under a tree as the slow lull of paddleboats on McGovern lake put your mind at ease. Toss the ducks a few crumbs and you’ll make a new friend for the whole day, too. (2006-07-07 19:24:27)

My girls absolutely love the train. The access to the Museum, Lake, Zoo and park facilities make this a favorite destination for my little budding family. We took an evening stroll through the park on Christmas evening and were delighted with the abundance of other families doing the same. (2005-12-27 10:35:36)

I have grown up playing in Hermann Park as a native. I am 82 years old. My friends Sara and John Lindsey just donated a Pavillion at the end of the reflection pool and lent their names to a fund raiser which raised over $400,000 Why are they not mentioned in any of these writeups? Or in the paper today. A large error if you ask me. (2005-07-23 21:44:52)

The peace and quiet is shattered by the miniature train that runs through the park. (2005-07-23 12:04:29)

The Cockrell Butterfly Center was a wonderful experience for 3 adults who visited recently. Quite educational about butterflies and insects. We saw butterflies emerging from their cacoons, and hundreds of very active butterflies of many species in the atrium. Be sure to visit on a day that’s warm and sunny because the butterflies have to warm up before they can fly. (2005-06-04 12:43:12)

Hermann Park is Houston’s equivalent of New York’s Central Park and is a whole lot nicer! The Park’s 445+ acres house the Houston Zoo, Museum of Natural Science, the Houston Garden Center and Japanese Gardens, Miller Outdoor Theatre, the Pioneer Log House Museum, and a public golf course. The Park has something for everyone. Visitors of all ages, which total more than 5.5 million each year, love the free performances at Miller Outdoor Theatre, the museums, and the great golfing. Kids especially love the zoo, miniature train, rolling down the Miller Hill, the pedal boats, and the incredible handicapped accessible playgrounds with water sprays keeping them cool in the summer. Anyone looking for some peace and quiet loves the spectacular new Jones Reflection Pool (Washington eat your heart out!) and expanded lake with wildlife habitats and fishing. To make sure Hermann Park stays a treasure for years to come, the Hermann Park Conservancy (formerly Friends of Hermann Park) is raising money and working with the City to improve facilities and parking and to preserve the trees and wildlife habitats. Houston is fortunate to have such an incredible natural oasis in the middle of the big city and to have the Conservancy working on its behalf to make sure Hermann Park is around for many generations to come.
