Transformed from movie theater, to Whole Foods, to Bookstop this space is a wonderful building to house all of the unique and inspiring books that it now does. This is a great place to come, relax, have a drink, and of coarse read! Located at Shepherd and W. Alabama this book store is close to almost anyone, and shares parking with other cool places…so check it out. Your brain will be glad you did.

I love the Bookstop. The inside looks so cool. It’s the only bookstore that I know of that has a balcony. I heard that it might be getting torn down so I’m writing an essay about it in school actually right now. If it gets torn down I’m going to be miserable! If they don’t want the Bookstop there any more then I would want them to atleast turn it back into a movie theatre, that would be cool! (2007-05-16 15:43:44) |

Bookstop was once the flagship store of a Texas-owned chain that offered 10% discounts on all books all the time, and 15% when you bought a $10 membership. It inspired the scene in film maker and former employee Wes Anderson’s “Bottle Rocket” (1996) in which the charecters rob a bookstore with small bags. I truly loved this store in its glory days - before it was bought out by corporate giant Barnes & Noble. Since the late 90’s B&N has let this beautiful and unique store decline because it doesn’t fit their cookie cutter sales plans. Now, to get even a 10% discount a Membership is required and itself now costs $25. They no longer maintain the beautiful old theater neons that ran throughout the store. Apparently, they now plan to abandon the site to build a new, more conventional store on W. Grey. Visit the Bookstop now to experience a truly imaginative retail space with some of the most knowlegeable sales staff around because it probably won’t be there much longer. I only hope that someone will step up and save this local treasure. (2007-04-27 22:30:48) |

A great place to relax and browse in PEACE! Doesn’t have the crowded bustle of other big chain bookstores- you can actually find a table to enjoy thier cafe offerings! If you need to unwind amidst a lot of beautiful books, I can’t recommend the Bookstop enough. Bookstop after work gets me through my day! (2007-03-31 12:19:19) |

It’s a beautiful bookstore located in a former theater in River Oaks. The architecture is 1930s art deco. (2006-09-29 16:05:54) |
