Landmark Theatres @ River Oaks

2009 West Gray St. | (713) 866-8881 | Website | Map

The River Oaks Theatre is one of Houston’s last true movie palaces, having kept its beautifully ornate Art Deco interior since it opened its doors in November, 1939, with the film Bachelor Mother starring David Niven and Ginger Rogers. At its inception, the theatre was operated by the Interstate Theatre chain, run by Karl Hoblitzelle, who once said, “the entertainment industry, more than any other business, is built upon good relations with the public.” That policy still exists today as the management team of the River Oaks, as well as the Greenway, works very closely with many community groups in marketing independent and foreign language films.

In the historically cool art deco theater on West Grey, near Shepherd. Around the corner from Marfreless. Favorite spot for indie films, and features midnight movie favorites on the weekend. Local Rocky Horror spot, featuring the Beautiful Creatures. Has a bar on site, and bagel dogs at the concession stand, inm addition to candy and popcorn. (2007-05-15 16:28:19)

What can I say about the River Oaks. My love of film blossomed at this theatre (along with the greenway). Some of my happiest memories have happened in this building. From the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival to the Annual Oscar Parties, the River Oaks has been a huge part of my life. Sure, the parking could be better. The upstairs theatres could use some new seats, but I wouldn’t trade it for all the state of the art theatres in the country. You can’t beat the atmosphere, the architecture, THE HISTORY! Of course, the full bar upstairs has made my visits to the theatre that much more enjoyable. Thank you River Oaks for keeping my love of film alive! (2007-04-03 17:59:50)

Who in their right mind would want to destroy this wonderful old art deco theatre. This is the only cinema in the inner city and the oldest I believe in the State of Texas.Did anyone of you ever go to the Rocky Horror Picture Show at midnight there? MEMORIES (2006-07-31 07:42:42)

Not only are the best films shown here, but how cool is it that I can go check out a flick at a threatre where my mom first saw 101 Dalmations when it premiered in 1961? Oh yeah, did I mention the midnight Big Lebowski showings? (2006-07-07 19:37:31)
