The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) of the Houston Independent School District evolved in 1971 from a realization that gifted young artists need highly specialized and rigorous training in the arts to be prepared for the intense competition they will meet in colleges, conservatories, and the professional arts world. The creation of HSPVA represented the first attempt by any public high school in the nation to correlate an academic program with concentrated training in the arts. Also, it was one of only three public schools in the nation to offer programs in both the visual and performing arts, and the first such institution in the Southwest. For HISD, the formation of HSPVA represented a dramatic departure from traditional comprehensive programs. Ultimately the school became the pilot school for today’s magnet school concept.

This is by far the best school in Houston. I attended there and I miss it very much. It’s funny though because it’s been over 10 years since I’ve been there and I still remember it like it was yesterday. PVA what a wonderful experience. (2008-06-03 22:30:30) |

This is an exceptional school that demands both artistic and academic excellence. While it is a public school in the Houston Independent School District the students must audition to be accepted and reaudition every year. Before graduation each senior performs a senior recital or displays a full art show. The school is run like a college campus with the exception that they are notallowed off-campus for lunch. The students put on full scale musicals, orchestra concerts, plays, art shows, participate in masterclasses/workshops with in-house and visiting artists. They also have opportunities to travel and perform! Did I mention they have won a few Grammys?! (2007-05-23 11:30:26) |
