The Glass Bros. Watermelon Stand has been operating in the Fifth Ward since the mid-1950’s. Once you get a melon from Mr. Glass, you will never try to pick your own melon at a grocery store or elsewhere. The best melons in town and great drive-by or sit-down service. Mr. Glass operates throughout the season—May through October—at the corner of Lorraine and Chase, just north of Minute Maid Park.

I was stationed in the Air Force at Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene Texas around 1959 and 3 of my Army friends decided to go and see the movie “Ben Hur” which had just opened. On the way down there we saw the Glass bros. Watermelon Stand. We all enjoyed the ice cold melon. The reason i am writing tonight is that i just got through having a few slices of watermelon and the Watermelon Stand came into my mind and i decided to go to the computer and try to find a web page on it and i did. It brings so many good memories about the people i knew in Texas. I am from Rhode Island. (2007-08-12 03:35:24) |

Iknow Mr. Glass Sr. died in April, I was hoping the stand was still open; however, it must be closed now. I was so looking forward to a “blast from the past” of experiencing ice cold watermelon at a stand like I did as a kid. (2006-07-19 14:34:28) |

nothing better than a cool slice of melon, and history at the same time, (2006-07-09 11:46:38) |

I worked at the Glass Brothers Watermelon stand for many summers from the age of 10 until I was emancipated and got a “real job”. Mr. Glass was one of the hardest employers I have ever had. I think he is the reason I am a board certified employment law attorney today. He had tough work ethics but also gave me my first paid vacation for a summer part time job. You see, he is my daddy.
