The meeting house is a three-room building with a “pre-function area” (for people to gather before meeting for worship to visit), the meeting room, and a “post-function” area (with bathrooms, a sink, and a table used for meetings). The meeting room itself is square, with plain plaster walls and tall windows, with a high vaulted ceiling, in which is the “skyspace.” Seating is provided by white oak benches of James Turrell’s design.
Normally, for meeting for worship on First Day mornings, we do not open the skyspace. But we do normally open it for Wednesday night Meeting for Worship (at 7:30 p.m.), and Friday nights, when we open the skyspace 30 minutes before sunset for everyone to enjoy. It is a wonderful experience, beyond the power of words to describe.

When the skyspace is open on Friday evenings, it is incredibly peaceful — a fantastic meditative experience that I highly recommend. (2005-02-15 14:42:57) |
